UK Laws & Regulations (2026)

It is important to understand the current UK legislation regarding electric transport to ensure you are riding safely and legally.

Electric Bike Laws (EAPC)

To be used on UK public roads and cycle lanes without a license, insurance, or tax, an electric bike must be classified as an Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle (EAPC). To qualify:

- Pedals: The bike must be fitted with pedals that can propel it.

- Motor Power: The continuous rated power of the motor must not exceed 250 Watts.

- Speed Limit: Electrical assistance must automatically cut off when the bike reaches 15.5 mph (25 km/h).

- Age Limit: You must be at least 14 years old to ride an e-bike on public roads.

If a bike meets these criteria, it is legally treated the same as a standard pedal bicycle.

Electric Scooter Laws

The regulations for private electric scooters are currently different from e-bikes:

- Private Land: Privately owned e-scooters are legal to use only on private land with the landowner’s permission.

- Public Use: As of 2026, it remains illegal to ride a privately owned e-scooter on public roads, pavements, or cycle lanes.

- Rental Trials: The only e-scooters legally permitted on public roads are those rented through government-approved rental schemes in designated trial areas.
